The Church of Santa Maria della Maddalena is a beautiful example of Genoa’s rich religious heritage. Located in the heart of Genoa’s historic center it also gives its name to the surrounding neighborhood. Although often overlooked by tourists, it holds centuries of history and some of the finest Baroque art in the city.

A Brief History

The first mention of a chapel dedicated to Santa Maria della Maddalena dates back to 1158, when it was part of the nearby San Lorenzo Cathedral. The church we see today is the result of major renovations that began in 1585, led by the architect Andrea Ceresola, better known as “Vannone”. Vannone worked under the patronage of the Spinola family, who commissioned the reconstruction. By 1589, the church featured a single nave, and a marble-columned portico was added to its entrance. In 1635, the church was further expanded, with two side aisles added to the original design.

Artistic Treasures

The interior of the church was completed between the late 1600s and mid-1700s, concluding with the rebuilding of the facade in 1911. One of the standout pieces is the fresco of the ‘Glory of Santa Maria Maddalena,’ painted by Sebastiano Galeotti on the dome. The central nave features incredible frescoes depicting biblical scenes, such as the Resurrection of Christ and the Crowning of Mary. Other notable works come from famous artists of the time, including Giovanni Battista Parodi, Paolo Girolamo Piola, and Domenico Parodi.

The façade is equally noteworthy, featuring five statues carved from white marble by Giovanni Pisano, dating back to the 14th century. These include a Madonna and Child, along with representations of the four Cardinal Virtues—Justice, Temperance, Prudence, and Fortitude.
