The Parco delle Mura: Genoa’s Nature Reserve

Nestled in Genoa’s highlands where Mediterranean and Alpine landscapes meet, you’ll find the Parco delle Mura (Park of the Walls). Spanning 617 hectares, it is the largest green space in the city and an important nature reserve for local wildlife. The park takes its name from the Mura Nuove, built in the 17th century to defend the city and its harbour. With its 12 kilometres of fortifications, it’s the longest city wall in Europe and is second only to the Great Wall of China worldwide!

A Blend of Historic Fortifications

The walls encompass several fortifications, most dating back to the 19th century. These were originally designed to withstand the Austro-Piedmontese siege in 1747. However, many of the masonry structures were never completed due to the financial constraints. The Forte Diamante is the only exception, funded by a wealthy local family.

The History and Purpose of the Forts

The fortifications were later expanded by the Savoy government between 1815 and 1830. Their construction introduced new techniques blended with a romantic medieval aesthetic. This shift in military architecture is still visible today, with a contrast between the clean, linear elements of the Napoleonic era and the more imposing structures added by Sardinian engineers. These changes were driven by advances in artillery, which required stronger, more durable walls.

While many of the planned fortifications were never completed, those that were built were meant to turn Genoa into a defensive stronghold. However, these forts never faced a direct enemy attack, and by the late 19th century, threats from Austria had faded. Still, tensions with France led to further updates in Genoa’s defences, particularly along the coastline.
