Nestled in Genoa’s historic centre, near the San Lorenzo Cathedral, the Church of Santissimo Nome di Maria e degli Angeli Custodi, also known as “Chiesa delle Scuole Pie,” stands out as a beautiful representation of late Baroque architecture. Its striking design, captivating artwork, and rich history make it a must-visit for anyone exploring Genoa.

A Glimpse into History

The church was commissioned by the religious order of the Piarist Fathers, or “Scolopi,” from Savona. It was designed by the Ricca brothers, originally from the valleys of Oneglia. Construction began in 1712, but took nearly 60 years to complete, with the final touches added around 1770. During renovations in the 1980s, archaeologists discovered remains from the Republican Roman period.

Art and Architecture

Its Baroque facade features a large central window, surrounded by intricate stucco work. Inside, the artistry truly shines. Visitors can admire paintings by Giuseppe Galeotti and Andrea Leoncini, along with frescoes by Francesco Maria Schiaffino. One of the church’s highlights is the sculpture of Mary with the Child, believed to be the work of either Tommaso Orsolino or Francesco Fannelli. Another beautiful piece is Giovanni Paolo Oderico’s depiction of a Guardian Angel, which is located near the crypt. Beneath the main floor, lies a crypt where members of the religious community rest.

The church is located in Piazza delle Scuole Pie, the church is easy to reach from the nearby San Lorenzo Cathedral. It’s open daily from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
