Architectural Highlights
The castle blends influences from the castles of the Aosta Valley and the Florentine palaces, with added touches inspired by medieval Genoa. It offers stunning views both from its terraces and from within its walls: the stone bastion, the porch adorned with sculptures by Giulio Monteverde, and the grand tower, which provides panoramic views of Genoa and the port. Inside, you’ll find a grand Neo-Gothic staircase, with rooms styled after different world cultures. Another unique space is the Captain’s Cabinet, designed to feel like the quarters of a ship.
The Museum of the Cultures of the World
Housed within the castle is the Museum of the Cultures of the World. The museum features artifacts collected by Captain D’Albertis on his travels across continents. Among the treasures are African weapons, Chinese spears, Ethiopian books and manuscripts made from palm leaves from Ceylon (present-day Sri Lanka). The collection includes objects from each continent, reflecting the captain’s passion for exploring the world and its diversity.
Who Was Captain Enrico Alberto D’Albertis?
Born in 1846 in Voltri, Genoa, Captain Enrico Alberto D’Albertis was an explorer at heart. Coming from a wealthy family with a textile business, he joined the Italian Navy and in 1870, he sold the shares of the family business and began travelling around the world. Eventually, he established Italy’s first yacht club. During World War I, he even contributed to naval patrols in the Tyrrhenian Sea.
